A couple years ago, when the recession starting kicking in and companies started salary freezes and benefit cuts, I realized that it would be beneficial to try and make extra money with online businesses. Something I could do on the side that would be there even if I got laid off.
I work at a marketing company doing copyediting, so my first step was to figure out how my income connection would work between my real job and my online job. Trying to figure out an entirely new field seemed like more time and effort.
Since I worked at a marketing company, the first field I looked at was internet marketing. Turns out a large number of online job opportunities focus on making advertising profits from home. There is a wide variety of ways to approach internet marketing, some being an affiliate for companies, placing your own ads, or creating a blog and allowing others to place ads on your site.
But internet marketing is actually a very different field than traditional marketing, so I decided to keep looking. The work I actually do at my company is copyediting, so I began looking into technical writing jobs or transcription jobs. I figured this was another good way I could create my income connection between the work I did at the office and the work I would do from home.
Unlike internet marketing and advertising profits from home, the technical writing jobs and transcription jobs were actually real jobs that required you to apply and be hired by a company. Some technical writing jobs were freelance, which would require you to actively be looking for your own employment from various companies.
So, while I thought I would enjoy technical writing and transcription more than internet marketing, I was looking for an opportunity that I could easily do on the side and that wasn’t subject to company layoffs and freezes like my main job was. Because of that, it seemed like internet marketing was a better opportunity for me.
If you are looking for your own work at home opportunity to make extra money, you should keep in mind that there are many opportunities out there, and you don’t necessarily need to join a brand new field you’ve never worked in before. There are online jobs and business opportunities for people with legal, medical, marketing, secretarial, and writing experience, among many others.
And if you feel you have no real experience to offer, there are lots of opportunities out there for people interested in market research, which just requires you to offer your opinions. No matter what type of work you’re interested in, if you just look around you’ll find something that will likely work for you.
